George Anderson & Gloria Vogt

August 2005

George & Gloria own a matching numbers "1964 1/2" Mustang. All
Mustangs produced prior to the normal August start of the 1965 production
year run have been lovingly given the "1964 1/2" moniker. Among Mustang
enthusiasts, the "'64 1/2" tag distinguishes this earliest version of the
Mustang from all others. It came equipped with a generator, not an
alternator as the later Mustangs had.

In August of 1964, version 2 was introduced with over 100 changes from the
original, including the conversion from a generator to an alternator. In January
1965, additional changes were introduced. Version 3 also included a
fastback model, introduced in April of 1965.

This particular coupe rolled off the Dearborn, Michigan assembly line on June 20,
1964, a mere 3 1/2 months after the very first Mustang rolled off. Only 92,705
version 1 coupes were produced. Ours came with an array of optional
equipment including, 289 V-8 engine (220 HP), 4-V carburetor, automatic
transmission, power steering, air conditioning, white vinyl roof, and black vinyl
and cloth interior. The vinyl and cloth seats were discontinued with version 2.
Thus, our coupe has straight vinyl seats. The original Cascade Green color was
also only available on the 64 1/2's. It too was discontinued in August of 1964.

The car looked good from 20-feet away. Up close, the flaws were obvious. In
October 2005, the car went into Hudson's Auto Body for a "face-lift".
The car looked worse when we pulled it back in July of 2007.

In November 2007, it went into Stiff Richard'z for a COMPLETE make-over.
Dave started taking the car apart, pulled all the glass out,
stripped off the vinyl roof and started stripping the paint layers....

and discovered an array of problems. The quarter panel skin welds had never been
ground down but banged in and filled in with mud. There were holes in
the floor pans, wheel housings and trunk. Because of the extensive
number of paint coats and amount of damage, it was decided to
replace the quarter panels, acid dip the doors, front fenders, hood
and trunk lids, replace the vinyl roof, floor pans, etc.

Hopefully, we will have the car finished by the end of February 2008.
The finished color has not yet been chosen, but we are leaning toward
a candy apple green over either silver or a dark green.
